Map showing the path of the Mangatarere Stream through Carterton, before emptying into the Ruamahunga River. The stream originates in the Tararua Ranges.

Mangatarere Catchment

The yellow line on this map shows the boundaries of the Mangatarere catchment area. The stream can dry up completely around Anderson's Line in the summer time, but is then replenished from groundwater further downstream. The Mangatarere flows into the Waiohine River south of Carterton off State Highway 2 near the shingle works, and from there  the Waiohine merges into the Ruamahunga River, which then flows into the sea at Palliser Bay via Lake Onoke.
